The exhibition Beyond the Drawing shows the wealth of current artist graphic positions in Berlin: exuberant pictorial narrative and strict reduction, figuration and abstraction, documentation and site inspection, illusion and its elimination, microscopic and generous, drawing as a performance, in books, in space or in animated film. Whether on paper or in connection with other media: the drawing goes beyond itself and transcends borders. The Berlin drawing scene also includes project rooms, magazines, networks and websites that deal with drawing and its expansion. Some of these projects are presented in the exhibition as examples.

The artist residency Villa Kamogawa was set up as an artist residency in the rooms of the Goethe Institute in Kyoto as part of the 150th anniversary of German-Japanese relations. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Villa Kamogawa, all residents were invited by curator Michael Hirschbichler to contribute a “Verbindungsstück” to the exhibition, which creates an associative and at the same time concrete connection between the artistic processes and the encounters on site. The exhibition opens in this way a diverse associative space, the strands which lead from the artistic works of the fellows to insights into the architecture and atmosphere of the villa itself, to questions about global interdependencies and new forms of cultural-political exchange programs.
“Villa Kamogawa in Berlin” invites you to the opening of the exhibition in the CLB on Moritzplatz on April 28th with a discussion panel with Johannes Ebert, Jun’ichiro Ishii, Wibke Behrens and Kerstin Eckstein. A catalog for the exhibition, which runs until May 15, 2022, will be published by the Berlin publishing house Wasmuth & Zohlen.

Exhibition within my residency @ Künstlerhaus of the city of Munich Villa Waldberta May-July 2021

With the group exhibition “unknowing now,” Villa Waldberta presents the work of participants in the residency program living and working together in the Feldafing Artist House this summer: Duane Corpis, Dragoș Hanciu, Timo Herbst, LEE Dong-Hwan, Eitan Rieger and Kinga Tóth. The pieces exhibited in “unknowing now” understand thepresent as part of an ongoing dialogue with both various traces of the past and with creative imaginaries of the future. Humanity exists in a “temporal bubble,” which we usually accept without question due to our
unmediated immersion in our own current moment. In this exhibition, the artists challenge this present-oriented point of view. Complementary yet different social, political, and aesthetic tensions are addressed in “unknowing now” (for example, the struggles for a democratic public, the feminist rethinking of religious rituals, and the interaction of new and old technologies) to raise the question of how the Now is imprinted by the past, and how we could dismantle this lasting impression with a more open perspective in order to create something new, which can expand beyond what we take for granted as the limits of our own Now.

GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig
GRASSI Museum Leipzig
Johannisplatz 5-11
04103 Leipzig
Exhibition duration: 07.05.2020—17.01.2021
From may, 7th the exhibition “Szenen des Lebes” is open at Grassi Museum für Völkerkunde Leipzig. Due to SARS-CoV-2/Covid 19 the opening of the exhibition was postponed.
The exhibition focuses on the collection of japanese artefacts by Heinrich Botho Scheube, a german medical in Kyoto at the of the 19th century. The central piece of this collection and exhibition is a japanese folding screen (»byōbu«) from the 17th century with depictions of street life in Kyoto.
My work “Rhythmnanlysis”, which works with scenes of contemporaray street life in Kyoto and Tokyo is shown in this exhibition together with the folding screen. I am especially happy about this combination, because old japanes depictions of street life were my inspiration back in Kyoto where I began the work 2016 during my residency at Villa Kamogawa.
The exibition is accompanied by a publication about the collection, it´s iconography and the restauration process of the folding screen. A contribution by Barbara John about “Rythmanalysis” is part of the publication.

The project is funded by the cultural office of Leipzig and Denkzeit-Fellowship of the Arts Council of the Federal State of Saxony.

Transforming Political Gestures through a chain – Performance Lecture and Installation
University of Potsdam, Nov, 1-3rd
The transformation of protest gestures during public protests, both within the motion itself and through media circulation, is to be exemplified with an installation. How does moments of affect, imitation and simultaneity come together? Working with a collection of visual, sonic and textual reflections of these gestures, we create a chain of translations: Out of descriptions of media images and drawings specific movement instructions are formed and re-played by headphones. The spoken instructions are inviting for imitation which are simultaneously scanned by a motion recognition system which uses the gatherd data to re-compose the sound recordings of the original protest sites. By separating the single medial and spatial elements of gestures the correlations in-between the elements of the chain are getting perceptable and interactive access points are opening up.
